This is a platform to propose ideas to improve design education in India.

  • Are you happy with the state of Design Education in India?
  • The number of design schools are increasing at a rapid rate in India, especially over the past few years. What is the quality of design education offered by design institutions in India now?
  • Do we sincerely update our design curriculum to match the rapid change happening in the world today?
  • Do we really teach everything mentioned in the curriculum?
  • Do we have a match between specialization of a faculty and the courses taught by him/her?
  • Do we create enough number of designers needed for a developing country like ours?
  • Do we have a system to attract the best design educators to enter teaching profession?
  • Are you happy with the rules and regulations (or the lack of it) regarding Design Institutes in India?
  • How do you react to the exorbitant fees charged by some design institutes
  • What do you feel about some institutes who appoint very very few full time faculty and run entire courses through visiting faculty

I am trying to make a document to improve the quality of Design Education in India.

My personal wishlist is as follows:

1. Introduce design education at an early stage in school education in India, preferably by 6th, 7th, 8th standards. Give basic exposure to various streams of design including Communication design, Product Design, Fashion Design, Animation, Mobility and vehicle Design, Apparel, fashion accessory, Architecture, Fine Arts etc.
2. Offer a platform in the 9th std to study one stream/specialisation of design with clarity, like an elective course.
3. Establish a government body to create quality benchmarks in the area of design education.
4. Create awareness programs to make public aware of what is design, what designers do, what can be the role of design in daily life, how design can solve problems and improve quality of life etc.
5. Create a platform for designers, design educators, design students etc to exchange ideas, knowledge etc with public and industry.
6. Create a platform for academia - industry - public interactions.
